Street of Sin ‘consecrated’ on Wednesday

Welcome to the street of Sin.

Marking the 83rd birth anniversary of the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, Catholic bishops and city officials today (Wednesday) will lead rites renaming a Mandaluyong street after the legendary prelate.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas and Antipolo Bishop Gabriel Reyes, both of whom served as Sin’s secretaries, will join several bishops and city officials in rites renaming the E. Rodriguez street in Mandaluyong as Jaime Cardinal Sin Street.

The street intersects Shaw Boulevard and runs along Villa San Miguel, the residence of the late archbishop. When welcoming guests, Cardinal Sin used to jokingly refer to the villa as the “house of Sin.”

“The idea to rename the street was put forward soon after the death of the charismatic Church leader, one of the heroes of the Edsa People Power Revolution,” said the Archdiocese of Manila in a statement.

“The blessing is also a way of ‘consecrating’ the neighborhood where a revered man of the Church once resided,” it added.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the ceremonies include the unveiling and blessing of the street signs: the corner of Shaw Blvd and Sin Street; Pascual and Sin Streets; De La Paz and Sin Streets and V. Victorino and Sin Streets.

Aside from Archbishop Villegas and Bishop Reyes, the other bishops who are expected to attend the event include former Pasig Bishop Francisco San Diego, current Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara, Cubao Bishop Honest Ongtioco, Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos and Manila Auxiliary Bishop Bernardino Cortez.

Mandaluyong City officials and a relative of Cardinal Sin were also expected to be present.

“After the unveiling and blessing, a short entertainment program will be held for the people mostly from the area, that will feature a magician to remember the occasions when Cardinal Sin would gather children in his residence to watch clowns and magicians,” the Manila archdiocese said.

“There will also be an exhibit of photos and memorabilia of Cardinal Sin at Villa San Miguel where one of the featured items is a vestment which had been worn by Blessed John Paul II and Cardinal Sin. Fireworks will conclude the event,” it added.

Are all freedoms of expression art? Who knows?

The debate is far from over: Are all freedoms of expression protected by the Constitution or are there limits? And what are the limits?

Priests and two national artists were on Tuesday unconvinced that freedom of expression could be invoked to defend artist Mideo Cruz’s “shock art,” which has caused a controversy that forced the closure of an exhibit at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

“Nothing is obscene in art. There are only bad artists and bad writers,” National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose said at the inquiry conducted by the Senate committee on education, culture and arts.

“The issue here is not freedom of expression [but] art. I saw the photos [of Cruz’s work] and it is not art. The photos illustrate how the artist is immature and juvenile,” Jose said.

Nat’l Scientist hailed with Golden Heart, autumn leaves

The words of her favorite song spoke the truth for those she left behind: “Since you went away, the days grow long / And soon, I’ll hear old winter’s song / But I miss you most of all, my darling, when autumn leaves start to fall.”

Sent off by loved ones and admirers with the somber lines of “Autumn Leaves,” National Scientist and eminent pediatrician Fe del Mundo was posthumously inducted on Thursday into the Order of the Golden Heart, a presidential recognition for distinguished public service.

President Aquino conferred the honors on Del Mundo through her nieces, Elisa Bengzon and former Ambassador Luz del Mundo, during necrological rites held at the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) compound in Taguig City.

Del Mundo, who would have turned 100 on Nov. 27, was later interred with full state honors at Libingan Ng Mga Bayani also in Taguig.

From HSKLC to MGMS

From “ Holy Spirit Kiddie Learning Center”
 to “Madre Giuditta Martelli School

True to the charism of the Parochial Handmaids of the Holy Spirit, the Community in Silang, Cavite have started in the year 1998 a catechetical lesson for the children living in the vicinity who need to grow in their love for God and for them to acquire Christian virtues. Most of the children came from poor families and some could not even go to school because of their poor economic conditions. To respond to the needs of these children who were eager to learn, the Community have extended a basic informal education in preparation for the children’s entrance to the formal elementary education. It started with only six children who faithfully came everyday for a two-hour lesson in the Community’s nipa-hut. After a year, the children received from the Community a certificate and medals in appreciation for their attendance and performance.
The following school year, 1999-2000, many parents from the neighborhood have requested the PHHS Community to continue with the basic education for their children. However at that time, the Community was lacked  of facility to accommodate the growing number of children, but could not also refuse the persistent request of the parents because their children were really in a necessary need for a preparatory education.
The Community, in order to help both parents and children, have made use of the existing multi-purpose hall and turned it into a two make-shift classrooms for Nursery and Prep classes. The place was called  the “Holy Spirit Kiddie Learning Center, very much like a day-care center for the children but with a closer supervision from the Sisters. Since then, a growing number of parents continued to enroll their children for the preparatory education. In the year 2001-2002,another classroom was added to provide a Kindergarten class. Gradually, The Holy Spirit Kiddie Learning Center have grown, responding not only to the children’s educational need living in the vicinity but also to those children from Amadeo, Tagaytay City and even from the town proper of Silang.

In the year 2005 the Holy Spirit Kiddie Learning Center was renamed into what is now known as the MGMS – Madre Giuditta Martelli School. The Securities and Exchange Commission recognized and approved its Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws on February 18, 2005.
Government Recognition Nos. K-025, s.2010; E-014, s. 2010 was granted on September 15, 2010 by the Department of Education Region IV-A CALABARZON.
The MGMS has not only provided the facility for the proper education of the children, but it has also successfully maintained a wholesome family atmosphere for the children to grow more fully.
Indeed, MGMS is “YOUR CHILD’S SECOND HOME”.

Who is Madre Giuditta?

Madre Giuditta Martelli, to whom our school is named. Madre Giuditta was born in Portigliola (RC) Italy on April 13, 1893 from a rich, Christian family. She had a profound Christian education that favored the development of the most elect virtues in her soul. As a young girl, she usually help her father, who was a doctor and was very active in helping the sick and the poor people in their place. She grew and fell in love with Christ. At the age of 22, deeply touched by the needs of the orphans, she opened our first house in Portigliola. The poor children were given shelter, food, love and proper Christian education. Filled by the Holy Spirit, her works grew like burning fire.
She gradually acquired the Christian virtues and has grown in her devotion to the Holy Spirit. In love and inspired with the same Spirit, she founded a Religious Congregation, the “Parochial Handmaids of the Holy Spirit” (Ancelle Parrocchiali dello Spirito Santo) in the year 1933 to embrace the local poor and the abandoned youth with true Christian education and love. In a few years, the Congregation has spread in different parts of the world, always catering to the needs of our poor brothers and sisters.
Madre Giuditta Martelli, the true handmaid of the Holy Spirit, was called back to heavenly home on May 21,1957 leaving behind the many pastoral activities which still continue up to now. The Congregation received from the Holy See the Pontifical approval on March 25, 1983. The acts of love which Madre Giuditta has planted have grown and will continue to grow because her spirit together with the Unseen God will hover along in the journey through life. On December 1, 2007, the Cause for Beatification of Madre Giuditta was officially opened by Mons. GianCarlo Maria Bregantini, Bishop of the Diocese of Locri-Gerace. The MGMS is just one of the many fruits of her labor of love.
